Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings guard LA Tenorio revealed today that he has been diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer and is taking proactive steps to combat it.

Dubbed Iron Man by the local basketball community, the former Ateneo Blue Eagle announced the diagnosis on Tuesday through the official PBA website.

In the statement, Tenorio apologized to his teammates, fans, and friends for keeping the diagnosis secret. He understands that since his profession is tied to “health and entertainment,” he cannot hide the specifics of his medical situation.

Tenorio detailed that he got the diagnosis three weeks ago and immediately took steps to address it. He immediately got operated on to address his cancer, at the cost of his impressive streak of 744 consecutive PBA games.

The Barangay Ginebra captain also said he would be undergoing treatment for the next couple of months. He also took the chance to thank the people and parties that have assisted in his latest battle.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have been helping me in this journey,” the 38-year-old guard said. “I am truly blessed to be part of the San Miguel Family – Boss RSA’s undying support and sincere care has been truly a Godsend. Boss Alfrancis Chua – my family and I appreciate you, thank you for everything.”

Tenorio, a Testament to Durability

Born Lewis Alfred Vasquez Tenorio, he first rose to prominence when he showed out against Ateneo’s grade school team.

He eventually joined the Blue Eagles after a successful junior career with the San Beda Red Cubs. While in Katipunan, he won one UAAP championship as the team’s premier point guard. However, his collegiate years were best remembered for Ateneo’s fierce rivalry with the De La Salle Green Archers.

He was selected fourth overall in the 2006 PBA Draft and has since played every game he participated in. Regardless of the team he played for, he had good health to play every minute of his PBA career.

While Tenorio focuses on his recovery, he clarified that he’s not retiring from the PBA. By the tone of his statement, he intends to return to the hardwood once he recovers from his condition.
